Highly Textured Librarian: Lena

high•ly tex•tured li•brar•i•an: A person who is a specialist in library work and has curly or kinky hair.

Welcome Lena to Librarian Dreams.

1. What is your signature hair style and how do you achieve it?

My signature hair style would be a very simple press and curl. I have no real talent for hair styling or upkeep so, thanks to my job as a librarian, I visit Bubbles Hair Salon every two weeks.

2. Which books could give insight on you as a person? Why?

There are several pieces that make up who I am; I’d say, ones that are most easily recognized by me and others would be: My Feminism/Womanism (Their Eyes Were Watching God), the love I feel for my people (The Autobiography of Malcolm X), a desire for true spirituality and self-correction (What Dreams May Come), the desire to find myself (Siddhartha) and, finally, my pride and feelings of duty which were born out of my profession (Fahrenheit 451).

3. What is your role at the library?

I am the (head, only) Librarian at the DCPS school where I work. My job includes teaching a research class, website development, collaborating with teachers, checking out books, and collection development. I hope to do more as time progresses!

What did you enjoy about library school?
I belong to NCCU’s School Of Library and Information Science class of 2010. On top of being proud to attend the last HBCU with a Library Science program, I’d have to say that it was my teachers and colleagues that were the best thing about library school. I learned about the role that the library plays within the lives of African-Americans, how to sift through information to determine its usefulness, and how people from different countries (via study abroad in Denmark) utilize the library in order to empower the people they serve. My library school really got me thinking about how I’m going to use my degree in order contribute to the betterment of the people in the world I live in.
