Highly Textured Librarian: Daenel

high•ly tex•tured li•brar•i•an: A person who is a specialist in library work and has curly or kinky hair.

Welcome Daenel to Librarian Dreams.

1. What is your signature hair style and how do you achieve it?

My signature hairstyle is the braid out. I usually wash my hair on Monday night and then put it in a bunch of small braids (between 10 and 12) and leave it until Wednesday morning, then I put a little oil on my fingers, unbraid and fluff. The style will usually last until my next wash with minimal handling, just a little more oil/moisturizer, fluff and go. My hair just gets bigger throughout the week and I love it.

2. Which books could give insight on you as a person? Why?

I remember watching the movie “Roots” as a kid and being totally floored by the brutality. But when I read the book as a teen, I was instilled with this sense of pride that I’d never known before. It was the first time that I really looked at “my people” and saw how much we had overcome and how much pride we should have in ourselves as a people. I think this book ought to be required reading.

3. What is your role at the library?

My family and I recently moved to Missouri, so I’m currently unemployed but definitely looking. If you know of any libraries that are hiring, let me know.

Prior to moving to Missouri, I was the Evening Public Services Librarian at Keystone College. I was responsible for helping students, faculty, staff and public patrons with all of their research needs. To say I loved it there would be putting it mildly. My co-workers were on top of their game, you know, willing to go above and beyond to help the students out and my supervisor encouraged us to explore our interests and find ways to integrate them into library services. For example, I’m into social media, so she let me set up and maintain various social media sites for our library (and they’re still being used). She also enrolled me in Keystone’s Distance Learning Program so that I could receive my certification to create and teach online courses.

4. What is your dream library job?

My dream library job would be one that allows me flexibility and creativity. I’ve worked in a variety of positions: archivist, reference librarian, systems, etc. and I enjoyed all of them. So if I could somehow mesh them all into one position that would be ideal. When I worked as an archivist, I enjoyed learning about digital preservation, creating online collections and providing access to materials that otherwise wouldn’t be available to the average person. I even created a flickr account so that we could post some of our pictures and it was so fun to receive messages from people saying “OMG, that’s my grandmother!” It gave us a real connection to the people who were accessing our material.

  1. Love your braidout Daenel! What do you do with you hair at night? Do you rebraid or just cover with a scarf?

    • Hi and thank you! Sometimes I rebrand it if I want the tighter but if I want it pouffy I just tie it up with a scarf. I used to pull it into a ponytail but I found that straightened it too much. You can also coil it and pin it up at night too.
